Overview
The Director of Business Operations is a senior leadership role responsible for building and leading the operating infrastructure that enables STN to scale effectively. Reporting to the CEO, this role provides strategic and functional leadership across business operations, people operations, logistics, administration, and operational systems. The Director translates company priorities into measurable operating plans, establishes scalable processes and controls, strengthens accountability, and ensures operational teams work together effectively.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, highly organized leader who can move fluidly between strategic planning and operational execution while developing capable functional owners. Success requires strong business judgment, process discipline, leadership capability, and the ability to improve systems rather than simply manage increasing complexity.

Key Responsibilities

Business Operations & Strategy

  • Lead the company's operating cadence and translate strategic priorities into operational plans, measurable objectives, and accountable owners.
  • Establish and monitor operational KPIs, service levels, management reporting, and review rhythms that provide leadership with clear visibility into performance.
  • Identify cross-functional bottlenecks, risks, and recurring issues; lead initiatives that improve execution, scalability, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Partner with executive leadership on annual and quarterly planning, budgeting, workforce and resource planning, and organizational priorities.
  • Serve as an escalation point for significant operational issues and ensure root causes, corrective actions, and ownership are clearly established.

People & Organizational Operations

  • Provide leadership and oversight of people operations and the employee lifecycle, including workforce planning, recruiting, onboarding, employee changes, performance management, development, and offboarding.
  • Ensure payroll, benefits, timekeeping, leave administration, personnel records, and employee documentation are supported by consistent processes, controls, and accountable owners.
  • Partner with managers on organizational structure, staffing plans, performance expectations, coaching, documentation, and corrective-action processes.
  • Oversee employee policies, handbooks, training requirements, compensation frameworks, career-development practices, and related people-operations standards.
  • Coordinate with qualified HR and legal professionals, as appropriate, to support compliance with applicable employment laws and maintain appropriate confidentiality.

Logistics, Procurement & Administration

  • Provide leadership and oversight of logistics, inventory, warehousing, shipping/receiving, transportation, asset tracking, procurement, and related operational support functions.
  • Establish appropriate inventory controls, documentation standards, service levels, and performance measures for company equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Oversee key operational vendors, carriers, suppliers, and service providers, including contracts, performance, cost, and risk management.
  • Ensure administrative operations, office/facilities coordination, company records, licenses, permits, insurance documentation, and recurring corporate requirements are effectively managed by appropriate owners.
  • Establish purchasing, vendor-management, and approval controls that balance responsiveness, cost discipline, and operational needs.

Operational Excellence, Systems & Risk

  • Evaluate critical business processes and implement improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, accountability, and scalability.
  • Ensure critical processes are documented through clear policies, SOPs, workflows, checklists, controls, and ownership standards.
  • Evaluate and implement business systems, automation, and integrations that reduce manual work and improve operational visibility and continuity.
  • Establish reliable data collection, reporting, approval, and internal-control practices appropriate to the size and complexity of the organization.
  • Identify operational, personnel, vendor, logistics, administrative, and continuity risks; coordinate mitigation, safety, incident response, emergency preparedness, and recovery planning with appropriate internal and external resources.

Leadership & Financial Accountability

  • Lead, coach, develop, and hold accountable managers and employees within assigned operational functions; establish clear roles, decision rights, performance expectations, and measurable objectives.
  • Build management capability and effective cross-functional communication so operational issues are identified early, escalated appropriately, and resolved systematically.
  • Develop and manage operating budgets for assigned functions; monitor expenses and identify opportunities to improve cost efficiency without compromising service or operational effectiveness.
  • Review significant purchases, vendor costs, contracts, staffing requirements, and operational investments based on cost, risk, efficiency, scalability, and expected business value.
  • Delegate day-to-day execution to appropriate functional owners while maintaining visibility, accountability, and performance oversight.

Experience & Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in business operations or related operational leadership, including 5+ years leading multiple functions, teams, or managers.
  • Demonstrated experience building or formalizing scalable business processes, operating rhythms, controls, and management systems.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and managing organizational change in a fast-paced, growing environment.
  • Experience developing and managing employees, supervisors, or managers and establishing clear accountability for outcomes.
  • Strong project management, analytical, problem-solving, financial, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and sound judgment when handling confidential or sensitive information.
  • Strong proficiency with modern business productivity, reporting, HRIS/ERP, project management, or other operational systems.

Preferred
  • Experience in a growing small-to-midsize organization where leaders are expected to operate both strategically and hands-on.
  • Experience overseeing people operations and/or logistics, inventory, procurement, warehousing, transportation, or supply-chain operations.
  • Experience implementing or integrating ERP, HRIS, inventory, project management, or other business operations systems.
  • Experience with budgeting, vendor negotiations, contract administration, and cost management.
  • Professional certification in operations, project management, HR, or supply chain management is a plus.
